Remington Jane Casteel

It's hard to believe it's been over a week since we said goodbye to our sweet Remington Jane. The past 12 years with her truly were some of the best years of our lives, filled with laughter, joy, and unconditional love. Remi wasn't just a dog; she was mine and Jarrod's first baby. She lived through so much life with us - 6 moves, 3 states, law school, my doctorate, adopting Rue, losing Jarrod's mom, Briggs being born, and everything in between.

Remi definitely lived up to the Weimaraner name, she was loyal, affectionate, and incredibly smart, but she was equal parts stubbornness and strong-willed. If she didn't want to do something there was no amount of training or persuasion that could convince her to do it. She was a true Velcro dog, forever by my side, convinced she was a lap dog. Despite her weighing a solid 70 pounds - there was nothing quite like having her curl up in your lap. She was majestic in every sense, and was the real "Smokey Grey"

Remi could ease any bad day with just her presence. A simple pet and a snuggle from her would wash away any worries. She was also the best running buddy. In her prime, she could knock out 5 miles or more like it was nothing. She thrived on those adventures with us, bounding majestically alongside, her joy contagious every step of the way. Getting to run with her will forever be one of my favorite things.

Our RJ loved being right in the middle of every hug, every family moment, as if she needed to make sure she was part of everything. She was our true companion, always wanting to be wherever the action was. She was the first to know I was pregnant, sensing, even before I did, that our lives were about to change.

She was always so playful and mischievous, even until the very end. She'd rather be chased than fetch the ball. And no sock was safe if Remi was around. They were her prized possessions. She also loved the snow and was a master at catching snowballs.

Her love for food was legendary — popcorn, watermelon, blueberries — you name it, she loved it, except lettuce   We tried to channel her hunting instincts, and while Jarrod joked that I loved the instinct right out of her, Remi was perfectly happy just being our companion.

She was the best big sister. Remi embraced Rue from the moment they met and they were inseparable ever since. And when Briggs came along, she accepted and loved him as well.

It's hard to imagine life without her, but we're so grateful for every silly moment, every joyful bark, and all the love she brought into our lives. Remi, you were one of a kind, and we will hold you close in our hearts forever. Thank you for all the wonderful memories, sweet girl. We love you all the way to God's house. You'll always be our first baby.
